About NUS Scotland

While maintaining strong links with the National Union of Students of the UK, NUS Scotland is an autonomous body which forms its own policies twice a year, at NUS Scotland Conference and Council. NUS Scotland's affiliates represent 76% of all the students in higher education and over 90% of students in further education in Scotland. It was formed in 1971 out of the Scottish Union of Students.

What do we do?

NUS Scotland's work is focused on further and higher education, and the interests of students and their educational environment. We provide a national platform for representation and campaigning, and deal with scores of organisations on a Scottish, UK and international level. We are proud of our reputation for a far-reaching and radical agenda in teriary education policy.

Over the years, NUS policy, considered quite radical at the time, has become accepted and implemented across institutions and government. Our detailed policy submissions, most recently to the Cubie committee and the Scottish executive, have won plaudits and respect.

NUS Scotland has established itself as the voice of students in the Scottish Parliament and has been involved in oral evidence, consultations and the largest lobby of MSPs to date, and we hope to continue demonstrating the talents and citizenship of today's student representatives.

NUS Scotland provides services to affiliated students' associations such as:

  • research and information
  • entertainment services
  • access to discounted products
  • welfare and legal services
  • training and development
