Tenancy deposit protection scheme - ACTION NEEDED NOW!

Last year, NUS Scotland's campaign on student housing, Brick by Brick, generated significant interest in the Scottish Parliament. One of the main findings was that one third of students have had their tenancy deposit unfairly withheld.

Graduate Endowment repayment - an update!

On 9th June the Cabinet Secretary for Education and Lifelong Learning, Fiona Hyslop, announced that Ministers would not be requesting repayment of any deferred graduate endowment fee until the students concerned complete their studies. Regulations have also been laid in the Scottish Parliament enabling students to pay their deferred graduate endowment fees through the student loans system.

What do you want to know about student finance?

Deadlines are approaching for students who want to ensure that finance is in place at the start of the autumn term, so how do you apply and when?

NUS had a representative on Money Box, the BBC Radio 4 financial programme, to answer questions on Scottish-specific finance issues. The show is available on Listen Again and a transcript should be up by Thursday 5 June.

'Scotland's Lost Opportunities' launched

On Wednesday 23 April 2008, NUS Scotland launched it's report 'Scotland's Lost Opportunities' outside the Scottish parliament. Students met with MSPs in a mock graduation ceremony. But it was only the wealthiest students who were allowed to graduate, while the others were forced to stand on the sidelines.

Are you interested in studying in Europe?

One of the main outputs of our project to engage Scotland's students in the Bologna process is a conference on student mobility. Scotland attracts a great number of students from all over Europe, but the number of Scotland’s students studying in another European country has not increased in the past few years. This is despite the obvious added value that studying abroad represents.

Scotland launches SLEEC

The Student, Learning, Enhancement & Engagement Committee will bring together all student officers across Scotland to form a national forum that will give student officers a voice in improving and shaping the student learning experience in Scotland. Two SLEEC groups will be created for each sector.

How do you manage your money?

You may recently have been asked to take part in the Scottish Student Finance Survey, if so - please take part. It is hoped the study's results will give an insight into how students manage their money, what they spend their money on, what kind of support they receive and how changes to the support system could affect them.
